My Background

Teaching Experience and Qualifications

Music has always been a huge part of my life, both my parents being musical and always having a piano in the house. My Mother learned traditionally as a child and my Father played several instruments by ear, so I had the best of both worlds in the sense that I initially had a talent to play by ear, followed by my attending lessons from the age of 11, which allowed me to work quickly through the piano grades. I also learned the cornet from age 11, initially joining the Cardiff Schools Brass Band, then the South Glamorgan Youth Brass Band, which was an extremely successful band, winning several competitions during the time I spent playing with them. The memory of playing in the Schools Prom at the Royal Albert Hall at the tender age of 13 is a memory I will treasure!

I did not initially pursue a career in music as I wished to play for my own pleasure, although I did spend six months as a restaurant pianist in 1990. After twelve years working in banking and finance, I decided to train as a secondary School Music Teacher, qualifying in 1998. I worked in several schools as a Music Teacher before deciding to widen my teaching skills by qualifying as a Primary Teacher in 2004.

This eventually led me to work within Additional Learning Needs, having now gained extensive experience teaching children with ALN. I have been a manager of, and taught within alternative provision settings, working with children who have experienced learning barriers due to behaviour, anxiety or diagnosed mental health problems, as well as those who are more able and talented. During my teacher training and subsequent employment as a teacher in schools, I have entered students for A.B.R.S.M. piano grade examinations (since 1997) with a 100% pass success rate, many with Merit and Distinction passes!

Some students prefer to learn the piano just for pleasure, whereas others wish to learn traditionally and pursue graded exams. I always adopt a teaching style that directly reflects the aspirations of my students, whether learning to play by ear, or learning how to read music from the beginning. My students feel comfortable with my teaching style and I always try to put them at ease, whether aged 7 or 70 - it is never too late to learn!

There are excerpts in the media section that you can listen to, along with some examples of students' own recordings.

Safeguarding Level 1 v3

I am fully registered with E.W.C. (Education Workforce Council) as a Qualified Primary and Secondary School Teacher, which allows my teaching within schools, of pupils from ages 3 – 19.

I have an Enhanced Disclosure DBS Certificate (formally CRB - Criminal Records Bureau check), which always remains current and up to date due to my membership of the DBS update service.

Individual Lessons

Promising personalised guidance and a friendly approach, with patience and understanding.

Girl Playing Beginner Piano

Beginners

New students can often feel nervous about starting lessons and can sometimes become frustrated with the mistakes they can make during lessons. I have always celebrated mistakes and I have been able to reassure students that the mistakes are needed in order to progress. I often play pieces for students in their lessons showing them my own mistakes!

Music Performance

Understanding

Learning a musical instrument is not easy, it takes patience and concentration, from both student and teacher. Some students have a natural ability and musical ear, whereas others may struggle. I understand all of the difficulties associated with learning the piano and I will utilise students' own strengths in order for them to progress. It is always delightful to see students' faces when they master a new piece or a difficult section of music!

Sheet Music Over Piano

ABRSM Examinations

Many students wish to work through the traditional piano grades and I have over 23 years experience in entering students of all ages for external examinations with the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music, with a 100% pass rate. If students wish to complete their grades, I can guide them through the process of learning their pieces, scales, sight reading and listening tests with patience and empathy. Practise is essential however! I will enter students when I feel they are ready and prepare them for the experience of an external practical exam. I remember how I felt leading up to each of my exams!

News & Updates

Update - 15 Dec 2021: Unfortunately due to the seemingly never-ending situation with Covid and the emergence of yet another variant, I have to continue to restrict lessons to online only, however I do hope to resume to face to face lessons as soon as the situation improves sufficiently to allow 1:1 lessons to take place safely. If you wish to make an enquiry about lessons, please use the contact form on this website, or if you prefer, please telephone me on 07793 060636. If I am unable to answer your call please leave a message. I will pick up all messages and website contacts at the end of each day and I will return your call or message as soon as possible.

Testimonials

I started learning the piano with Andy nearly 2 years ago at the age of 52 and a complete beginner. I couldn't read a word of music. I wasn't sure how feasible it was to learn at my age, but Andy has been great at teaching an old beginner. He has a very easy relaxed teaching manner, which has given me great confidence. I am delighted with my progress and can now play quite a pretty tune on the piano. If I mention to Andy a piece of music I like, he will find me a version suitable for my level. I am very happy with my progress over the 2 years, so much so that I have decided to give the exams a go in the Autumn.
